Aren't Vegan makeup products the same as Cruelty-free makeup products I hear you say. Well, actually the answer is NO!
The use of the term Vegan can be misleading and is also used many times as a marketing ploy as most people assume Vegan is same as Cruelty-free.
So just to clarify, Vegan means that the product does not contain any animal derived ingredients or products. It does mean that they could have at some point been tested on animals.
Cruelty-free means that products are not tested on animals at any point during the creation, so from start to finish. However, they may not be vegan as they could contain animal products or animal-derivatives like beeswax, collagen or gelatine.
There are so many products in the market that are using the "Vegan" tag and marketing them as cruelty-free but actually, they are not, so it's always worth checking out your makeup choices.
It can be very confusing checking out the back of a makeup packet as they not only state the ingredients but also all the certifications.
Keep an eye out for organizations and accreditations like PETA, Vegan Action, The Vegan Society, Choose Cruelty-Free or Leaping Bunny as then you will know exactly what you are buying is what it claims to be.
