Deconstructed Eyeliner: How to Wear the Asymmetrical Goth Look

Matching wings can take the evening off. Here is how to build deconstructed eyeliner with one upper-lid stroke, one lower-lash accent and plenty of intention.

Matching wings have ruled the makeup bag for long enough. Deconstructed eyeliner takes the familiar black line, splits it into separate gestures and lets each eye do something different. One eye might carry a blunt upper-lid stroke; the other gets a clean line beneath the lashes. It is asymmetric, intentional and gloriously free of the ten-minute battle to make both sides agree.

The idea came through clearly at the Autumn/Winter 2026 shows. At Proenza Schouler, makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver broke a classic look into off-kilter pieces, placing liner differently on each eye. Vogue also identified imperfection and asymmetry as a wider runway direction. This is not random smudging dressed up in black: placement is the point.

What makes deconstructed eyeliner work?

The look needs contrast and repetition. Contrast tells the viewer the mismatch is deliberate; repetition keeps the face connected. Use the same black, similar line weight and equally clean edges on both eyes, but change the position.

Keep the rest of the face quiet. Natural skin, softly groomed brows and a neutral lip give the liner room to look editorial rather than unfinished. Think human hand, sharp idea, no symmetry tax.

Step 1: plan the mismatched eyeliner look

Look straight into a mirror and choose two placements that suit your eyes. A simple pairing is an upper-lid block on one side and a lower-lash line on the other. If your eyes are hooded, map the upper stroke with your eye open so it remains visible. Keep both lines short at first; you can always summon more drama later.

Step 2: draw one bold upper stroke

Use the black Infinity Eyeliner Pen to draw a compact line across the outer half of one upper lid. Its super-fine brush tip lets you sketch lightly, then build the shape without dragging. Stop before it becomes a conventional full wing. A squared or softly tapered end feels more modern than a feline flick.

Step 3: move the line below the other eye

On the opposite eye, place a slim stroke beneath the outer half of the lower lashes. Follow your natural eye shape rather than pulling the line down. Match the visual weight of the upper stroke, not its exact length. Step back from the mirror after each pass; asymmetry reads best from a normal viewing distance.

If the pair feels disconnected, add one tiny repeated detail, such as a dot at each outer corner or a short dash at both inner corners. One echo is enough. We are deconstructing, not filling in a particularly anxious colouring book.

Step 4: keep the lashes defined, not identical

Finish with AMPLIFIED Mascara, combing the pitch-black formula through both sets of lashes. For balance, add a touch more mascara beside the lower-lash stroke and slightly more lift beside the upper line. The product page describes the tubing formula as water-resistant and easy to remove, useful when the graphic placement is meant to stay crisp.

Make asymmetry feel like yours

Photograph the look, then flip the placements next time. Deconstructed eyeliner is a method rather than a fixed diagram: upper versus lower, thick versus thin, curved versus blunt. Keep the colour consistent, leave breathing room around each stroke and stop while the idea still feels clear. Perfectly matched wings may be classic; this autumn, letting them disagree is much more interesting. 🖤
